Babson & Co. makes several appointments

RECENT APPOINTMENTS AND PROMOTIONS

David L. Babson & Co., a Cambridge institutional money managerwith more than $20 billion in assets under management, has announceda number of management promotions and appointments.

Appointed as executive vice presidents and directors were: StephenB. O'Brien, who will be responsible for institutional marketing;Lance F. James, who will lead the Enterprise Group, a small-capitalization investment team; Frank L. Tarantino, chief financialofficer and chief operating officer; and Walter T. McCormick, whowill head the growth & income team.Also promoted were: Maureen Bates, to vice president ofinstitutional sales; Mary Guy, to vice president of client services;and Pamela Murray, to vice president, director of marketingadministration.The company also noted that Peter C. Schliemann, whom James isreplacing, is leaving to establish his own business. BostonBiomedica names senior VPBoston Biomedica has named Dr. William Prather as senior vicepresident for business development. In this new position, Pratherwill be responsible for investor relations, due diligence onpotential acquisitions, medical and technical strategic advice andplanning, and other business development activities.Prather joins West Bridgewater-based Boston Biomedica with morethan seven years of experience as a health care analyst for bothinstitutional investment advisers and Wall Street investment bankingfirms. Other appointmentsExcel Switching Corp., a Hyannis-based provider of open switchingplatforms for telecommunications networks worldwide, has appointedNick Toumpas as vice president and general manager of its OpenNetwork Platforms strategic business unit.Toumpas will be responsible for developing and implementing themarketing strategy addressing Excel's open network platforms. Hejoined Excel after it bought XNT Systems Inc., a software firm, wherehe was president.
