Unraveling protein structure

How a protein folds in on itself is key to how it functions in the body. Understanding the structures of target and therapeutic proteins is a fundamental part of the drug discovery and development process. The American Chemical Society devoted the November 1998 issue of its Accounts of Chemical Research journal to advancements in protein folding and threedimensional research. California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, CA) scientists Jay Winkler and Harry Gray wrote in a guest editorial that protein folding research is undergoing explosive growth.
