Qld: Hundreds evacuated in Brisbane amid explosion fears
About 200 people had to be evacuated from homes and businesses near the mouth of theBrisbane River today because of leaking methane gas.
Police evacuated buildings within two kilometres of a leaking storage tank at the LuggagePoint sewage treatment plant because they feared an explosion.
Emergency workers say a gasometer started to leak when part of its floating top slippedout of its framework about 5.30am (AEST) today.
Brisbane City Council workers shut off the flow of methane from the gasometer, whichcan hold up to 20,000 litres.
The treatment plant is close to Brisbane airport, but airport operations were not affected.
